John G. Pagath Jr., 81, passed away after a lingering illness on Sunday, May 7, 2017.
Born in Zanesville, Ohio September 21, 1935, John was the first son of the late John G. (Legs) Pagath Sr. and Lillian E. Stoner.
John graduated from Lash High School in 1953 and enlisted in the Navy shortly thereafter, serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV 42) as a fire control technician in an air defense (radar guided) gun emplacement. The FDR was part of a carrier battle group which traveled the world during the Korean War era. After an honorable discharge, John attended Tri-State Engineering College leading to a career with Armco Steel, where he worked as a Research Technician in the research lab in Middletown, OH.
John was a published expert in the field of Thermography and was key to the utilization of thermal inspection to identify potential problem areas in all Armco furnaces, and was the sole operator of Armco's expensive infrared camera, traveling to each facility. He retired in 1993.
John enjoyed traveling, bowling, the Bengals/Reds, and in general, having a good time with friends.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW and member of the American Legion, Post 29. John will sadly be missed by a sister Anna Pagath Erwine of Santa Ana, CA; three brothers, David E. of Mesa, AZ, Daniel R. of Pittsburgh, PA, and Donald P. (Melanie) of Duncan Falls, OH; a daughter Michele (Brion) Hubbard and grandson, Derek of Zanesville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Moya.
Friends and family may call from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE and one hour prior to funeral services which will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, May 12, 2017 at the funeral home. Full Military Honors will be accorded to him by the Navy in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29.
He will be laid to rest at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.
