Mattie Burleson

Mattie Burleson, 81, of Reidsville, NC passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016 in the Annie Penn Hospital. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Stokes and Naomi Greene Burleson. Mattie was one of fifteen children which included: Pless, Nona, Lona, Susie, Dessie, Jay, Lena, Myrl, Mae, Jack, Avery, Betty Lou, Corine, and Lee.

Mattie's children are: Danny Mason and wife Linda; Mike Mason and wife Deanna Deborah Mason; Judy Lanfair; Frank Mason (deceased); Jim Mason and wife Angie; grandchildren: Tammy, Timmie, Todd, Misty, Michael, Sonya, Mandy, Tommy, Lloyd, Tammy, Jackie, Kimberly, Linda, Frankie, T.J., Judy, Amy, Jimmy, Justin, Jared and Daniel.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 21, 2016 in the Cane Creek Cemetery.

Robert William "Bobby" Huskins

Robert William "Bobby" Huskins, age 89, of the Lily Branch Community, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. He was the son of the late Charles and Creanie Gouge Huskins. Bobby was a member of the Lily Branch Baptist Church, the National Rifle Association and the American Chestnut Association. He also retired from the engineering department of DuPont and was a veteran of the United States Army. He served in World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd airborne, and was also a demolition specialist.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bertha Tipton Huskins; daughters: Rebecca Huskins of Camden, SC, Deborah McTeer and husband Doug of Early Branch, SC, and Pamela Courtney of Bakersville; son, Robert "D.R." Huskins of Camden, SC; grandchildren: Shayna Howell, Evans McTeer, Caroline McTeer, Kayla Hough and Lana Huskins; great grandchildren: Jase Howell, Morgan Mae Howell, Gracie Hough, Ronnie Hough and Jacob Hough. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Alvin, Charles, Ruth, Marvin, Homer, Fuller, Lloyd, Mary Lou, Brose, Kathleen and Carl; and his son in law, Tom Courtney.

Funeral Services will be 4:00 pm Thursday, April 21, 2016 in the Lily Branch Baptist Church with Vern Grindstaff and Don Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph DAV Chapter 57. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Gloria Young Yuhn, age 72 of Cannon Rd, Marion, NC passed away April 21, 2016. She was born in McDowell county, NC to the late Emory Brown and Cleo Lingerfelt Young. She was a member of Bakersville Baptist Church and was retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture Company in Marion, NC.

Survivors include; her husband, Dale Yuhn, of the home, one son, Mark Christopher Gray and wife Tammy, of Marion, NC, a sister, Brenda Young Dixon, of Winston Salem, NC, aunt, Thurley Burnette, and a special friend since childhood, Myra Howell of Bakersville, NC, step grandchildren; Karissa, Bryson, Brittan, and Karissa, and a great step grandchild, Carson.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 3:00PM in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with Chaplain Richard Anderson officiating. Brooke Greene, age 38 of Bakersville, NC passed away April 21, 2016. She was a native of Mitchell County, NC. She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church, and was employed in the rental management business.

Survivors include her parents, Russell and Sondra Hobson Greene, of Bakersville, NC, maternal grandmother, Helen Slagle Hobson, aunt, Sherry Slagle Hobson, and cousin, Adam Hopson, all of Bakersville, NC.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Wiley Hobson, and her paternal grandparents, Woodrow and Kate Greene.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 5:00PM at Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Randy Wise and Larry Greene officiating. Interment will follow the service.

Jayne "Granny" Lewis Phillips, age 81 of Phillips Rd, Burnsville, NC went home to be with the Lord on April 22, 2016. She was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a daughter of the late Jess and Lovinah Barnett Lewis.

Survivors include: children; Eddie Lewis and wife Jerri, of Marion, NC, Carol Honeycutt and husband Grant, of Green Mountain, NC, Doug Phillips and wife Rhonda, of Marion, NC, John Phillips and wife Michelle, of Burnsville, NC, and Angie Penland and husband Mikel, of Saltville, Virginia, fourteen grandchildren; Sonya, Tonya, Reid, Cole, Dustin, Amanda, Erica, Jason, Sarah, Josh, Matthew, Bethany, Mikel, and Gabriel, five great grandchildren; Lloyd, Will, Isabella, Bulma, Willis, granny's leapshins; Dakota, Keith, William, Levi, Curt, Caden, Ethan, Logan, Mikayla, Sabrina, Sierra, Jenn, Victoria, Deseree, and Ashley.

She was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a daughter of the late Ralph and Modine Hughes Greene. She was retired from the Toe River Health District. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and former member of Roan Mountain Chapter 29 Order of The Eastern Star.

Survivors include: her husband Eldon Cooke Sr., of the home, sons; Eldon M. Cooke Jr., and wife Lisa of Supply, NC, Gregory David Cooke of Johnson City, TN, and Sam Flemons Cooke, and wife Amy of Johnson City, TN, six grandchildren; Justin Cooke, Cassie Huskins, Mindy Murphy, Clayton Cooke, Nathan Cooke, and Baylen Cooke, six great grandchildren; Haley Huskins, Colton Huskins, Mackinzie Cooke, Kylie Cooke, Jason Murphy, and Emma Lee Murphy.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by one sister Betty Jane Greene.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 7:00PM in the chapel of Henline Hughes Funeral Home, with Daniel Whetstine, Shane Gunter, and Eldon Cooke Jr. officiating. Olive Louise Bowyer, 97, of Gulf Breeze, FL passed away on Monday, April 25, 2016 in The Beacon Assisted Living. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mattie O'Berry Townsend and the wife of the late Henry Bowyer who died in 1997. She and her husband were former residents of Bakersville, NC.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bakersville Baptist Church, and also a former member of The Red Hat Club in Bakersville, NC.

Survivors include: her sons; Duane E Bowyer and wife Rowena, of Freeport, Florida, Larry M Bowyer and wife Ann Marie, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, and Bruce T Bowyer and wife Regina, of Roebuck, South Carolina, one sister; Florence Mullinex, of Bakersville, NC, ten grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, and a brother in law; William Amiro, of St Petersburg, Florida.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by: her husband; Henry Bowyer, two brothers; William and John Townsend, and two sisters; Martha and Ruth Ann.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 pm Sunday, May 1, 2016 in the Bakersville Baptist Church with Vernon Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in the Bakersville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 pm Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Henline-Hughes Funeral Home.

Gloria Jean Hembree age 81 of Bakersville, NC passed away April 29, 2016. She was a native of Ottawa, Ill and the daughter of the late Frank and Nellie Monterastelli. Gloria was a homemaker and a member of Moose Lodge #1959 in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was also a volunteer for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Youth Programs and enjoyed volunteering in the community where she lived.

Survivors include: her husband James Willard Hembree Jr., of the home, three sons; Craig James Hembree (Patricia), of Santa Rosa, California, Kurt John Hembree (Wanda), of Clovis, California, James Willard Hembree III, of Wilmington, NC, two daughters; Christine Louise Ridgeway (Ron), of Chiefland, Florida, Mary Emma Gillis (Joe), Navarre, Florida, and four grandchildren; Jett, Daryl, and Sierra Hembree, and Carl Gillis.

A memorial service will be held Friday, May 6, 2016 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Grover C. Conley, Jr

Grover C. Conley Jr. (Johnny) died peacefully at his home in Spruce Pine, NC on May 1, 2016. Johnny was born in Penland, NC as the first son to Grover C. Conley Sr. and Emma Young Conley on October 27, 1924.

He attended The Appalachian School in Penland and Bowman High School in Bakersville. He was a Roadman in Tennessee, working with several parties to measure elevations and distances before being drafted into the Army during WWII. As a member of the 5th Army under General Mark Clark, he fought across North Africa, up through Sicily and into Italy. He was injured in May 1944 at Anzio and earned a Purple Heart. After he recovered, he went on to fight in France. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre, and EAMET Campaign Medal with 3 bronze service stars, a Victory Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. He received and honorable discharge in November 1945.

After the war, Johnny returned to the mountains he loved. He met, and married, a young French Canadian girl, Theresa LaFrance. At the time of his death, they had been married for over 62 years. Johnny and Theresa moved to Michigan where Johnny worked in Heavy Construction. he worked on jobs as far north as Lake Superior State College in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to as far south as Orlando FL where he worked on the Epcot Center.

Upon his retirement, he began returning to Penland every summer to renovate the home his father built and where he was born. He and Theresa later moved to Spruce Pine.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Theresa; four children: Stephanie (Mel), Michael (Janie), Pierre (Carmen), Laura (Scott); nine grandchildren (Chris, Andrew, Jenny, Eric, Duncan, May, Charlotte, Emma, and Lucy); five great grandchildren (Evan, Tristan, Tyler, Lily, and Jaedyn); one sister, Bertha Rohleder; and two nephews, Phil Conley, and Howard Rohleder.

No services are to be held at this time.

George Yelton age 87 of Jarrett Rd, Bakersville, NC went home to be with the Lord May 2, 2016. He was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a son of the late Bristoe and Ethel Stanley Yelton. He was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church and was retired from Unimin Corporation. He loved to be outdoors and especially loved fishing, lawn maintenance, and working in the garden.

Survivors include: his loving wife Laura Abernathy Yelton, of the home, two daughters; Sharon Hopson (Cotton), of Burnsville, NC, Janice Sparks (Larry), of Spruce Pine, NC, four sisters; Juanita Shuffler, Shelby Jean Street, and Marie Morgan, all of Bakersville, NC, and Edith Street, of Peoria, Ill, five grandchildren; Shane, Matthew, Angie, Kimberly, and Ashley, seven great grandchildren; Brianna, Corbin, Tyler, Gavin, London, Hayley, and Christian.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by; a brother James Lee Yelton and a daughter Sandra Buchanan.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 3:00PM in Bear Creek Baptist Church with Bruce Cannon and Chris Rathbone officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow at Bear Creek Mausoleum.

Sherrill Roger Byrd age 75 of Hwy 19E, Spruce Pine, NC passed away May 4, 2016 at his home. He was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a son of the late Marshall Lee and Mae Greene Byrd. He was a member of Estatoe Church of God and was a retired truck driver for Dwayne Ledford Trucking

Survivors include: his wife of 45 years Sabra B. Byrd, of the home, two grandchildren; Hannah and Noah Mason, three sisters; Sabra Hobson (Baxter), and Pam Snyder (Sam), all of Marion, NC, Brenda Hartley, of Unicoi, TN a brother; Jerrell Byrd (Brenda), of Johnson City, TN, and one son in law; Scott Mason.

He was preceded in death by his daughters; Brandy Ann Mason and Robin Lynn Byrd.

GIRARD, OH - Santo A. Putigano, 91, died Thursday morning, May 12, 2016 at Caprice Health Care Center.
“Sandy” was born in Akron, Ohio on Aug. 17, 1924, to his parents, Louis and Annette Monaco Putigano.
He graduated from The Rayen School, Youngstown, Ohio in 1943, and from Youngstown College Business School in 1948, where he was in the Alpha Sigma Chi Fraternity and an original charter member of the fraternity.
From 1943 to 1946, he served in the 249th Combat Engineer Battalion, attached to Patton’s Third Army in Europe and received four major battle stars for the northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and central Germany Campaigns.
The 249th was cited by the Belgium Army for gallantry during the Ardennes Campaign.
Sandy was a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge National Chapter in Washington, D.C., life member of the V.F.W. Post 419 in Girard, Ohio where he served as past post first vice commander, a life member of the American Legion Dewitt McConnell Post 235 in Girard, where he served as past post service officer, a member of Disabled American Veteran Chapter 11 in Warren, Ohio and a member of Amvets National Chapter.
He worked for the Transportation Department of Liberty Schools for 17 years before transferring to the high school to work as their custodian and boiler operator for 12 years and was a member of the Liberty School Custodial & Transportation Retirees Association.
Sandy was a guitar instructor for the Strouss Music Store in Warren for 10 years, played in several bands during the 40s, 50s, and 60s in the Youngstown and Warren areas, and was a graduate of the U.S. School of Music for guitar in 1965.
He enjoyed the big band sounds era of music and football, baseball, golf, bowling, and softball, which he played in the LL Parker League at Oakland Field during the 40s and 50s.
He also played with teams from the Briar Hill area.
Sandy also enjoyed traveling, yard work, and attending his retiree dinners and Army unit reunions and was also a member of the AARP and Parkinson’s Group in Youngstown, OH. (Mahoning County)
He is survived by his son, David Putigano; his daughter, Sandra Putigano; and his brother, Robert “Ribby” Putigano.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife the former Louise Sferra, whom he married Aug. 10, 1957, and who died Feb. 21, 2004; a brother, Mario James Putigano; and a sister, Viola Franco.
Family and friends will gather from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, May 15, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Monday at the Schiavone Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2016, at St. Anthony of Padua Church

Katherine Prowznik

LAKEWOOD, Ohio – Katherine Prowznik passed away peacefully on May 15, 2016, of natural causes. She was in the loving comfort of family and friends.

Katherine “Kate” was born on July 18, 1918, and was the youngest daughter of immigrant parents, Paranka (Kaciora) and John Prowznik.
She was preceded in death by her six siblings, John, Anne (Hoagland), Peter, Mary (Daroski), Kazmir and Daniel.
Katherine was a cherished aunt and great-aunt of many.

She was a member of the Cove United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading, poetry, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Although she faced many challenges in her time, she had a long and wonderful life and provided much enrichment, love and guidance to those around her.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, Ohio, where the family will receive friends on Friday from noon until the time of service.

UNION TOWNSHIP – Donald Piccari, 78, passed away the evening of May 15, 2016, at Jameson Care Center.
Born on Nov. 9, 1937, in New Castle, PA., he was the son of the late Dominic and Emma Schuler Piccari.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 56 wonderful years, the former Corrine Biddle, whom he married on Feb. 6, 1960.
Donald retired as the assistant superintendent for Republic Steel and LTV after 32 years of working. He also worked at EEC in Hubbard, Ohio as the maintenance supervisor.
In his earlier years, he was a baseball coach and was very involved with Union Township Little League and athletics.
In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his children, Bryan Piccari and wife Michelle of Tampa, Fla. and Susan Butch and husband Albert of Edinburg, Pa.; sister Barbara Murray and husband Pat of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and grandchildren Brandon Mittler, Alyssa Piccari, and Travis Butch.
Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road.
A procession will leave the funeral home on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Vitus Church.
Entombment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens.

CRAIG BEACH - Theodore Joseph “Ted” Jagietta Jr., 66, passed away Monday, May 23, 2016, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born July 7, 1949, in Ravenna, Ohio, to the late Theodore and Ella (Parsons) Jagietta Sr.
Mr. Jagietta had lived in Craig Beach the past 38 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newton Falls and was a member of the Lake Milton Fish and Game Club.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and archery.
Ted had retired from RB&W in Kent, Ohio, where he worked as a machinist, and after retirement, worked as a custodian for Lake Milton School System.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Lewis) Jagietta, whom he married March 11, 1972; his son, Charles (Carrie) Jagietta of Newton Falls; grandchildren Zoey Jagietta, John Jagietta, and Daniel Martinze; and sister Carol Agema of Randolph, Ohio. (Portage County)

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Racheal Ann Jagietta.
Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 26, 2016, at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Homes, Ravenna, Ohio Chapel. Burial will follow the services at West Cemetery in Palmyra.
